Regional level

Some intermediaries of cabins convey cabins in two or more counties. These respondents report guest nights distributed by counties. When publishing the statistics, guests nights are aggregated into regions.

Frequency and timeliness

Yearly publications, with monthly figures. Figures are published within three months after the end of the reference year.

International reporting

Microdata

Microdata are stored in Oracle databases.

Background

Background and purpose

The survey was established in 1999. In the period 1999-2006 the statistics covered both Norwegian and foreign intermediaries. Since 2007 only intermediaries with activity in Norway are included

To enable comparability over time, publications since 2007 contain two sets of figures. The first set is comparable over the period 1999-2005 and the other set is comparable for 2007 and onwards.

Responding was voluntary for foreign intermediaries, which resulted in problems in data collection and irregular publications. The scope was changed to intermediaries with activity in Norway and hence subject to the Statistics Act of 1989, § 2-2 and 2-3.

Users and applications

Primary users of the statistics are the Norwegian Tourist Board, trade organizations and research institutes.

Knowledge of tourist traffic to Norway is vital in assessing both the results of Norwegian marketing efforts abroad and the government's effort in making this industry a growth area.

Equal treatment of users

No external users have access to the statistics and analyses before they are published and accessible simultaneously for all users on ssb.no at 8 am. Prior to this, a minimum of three months' advance notice is given in the Statistics Release Calendar.

Coherence with other statistics

In combination with our accommodation statistics, this statistic contributes to more complete coverage of the Norwegian market in commercial accommodation.

Legal authority

The Statistics Act of 1989, § 2-2 and 2-3.

Production

Population

The population includes all commercial intermediaries of private cabins and houses with activity in Norway.

Data sources and sampling

The data is obtained electronically directly from the units.

All units are included.

Collection of data, editing and estimations

Registration of the questionnaires is done manually. Data on all questionnaires are subject to logical controls.

The respondents can choose to report guest traffic either by unit nights or by guest nights. Unit nights are converted to guest nights by multiplying units by a factor of 5. This factor expresses the average number of people/travelers sharing a cabin.

Seasonal adjustment

The results are presented in its original form.

Confidentiality

To limit the dangers of individual identification, cells based on fewer than 3 units are not published. To ensure confidentiality is preserved, counties are aggregated into regions.

Comparability over time and space

In the period 1999-2005 the statistics covered both Norwegian and foreign intermediaries, but only intermediaries with activity in Norway since 2006. This change compromises comparability over time.

Accuracy and reliability

Sources of error and uncertainty

Incorrect responding can occur due to incorrect data entry, interpretational errors and for other reasons. As a result, figures will occasionally be edited.

At the deadline, the response rate is around 70 per cent. Subsequent reminders usually increase this rate to 100 per cent.

Figures are estimated for non-respondents, based on the number of guest nights from the same period the year before and adjusted for general developments in the industry.

A factor of 5 is used to convert unit nights to guest night; this factor may not accurately reflect the relationship between guest nights and unit nights.
